That's true. However, in the scenario in this book, the author points out that BOOKS are available as well as non-electric scales. So they should have been able to master the craft pretty easily. The "tongue test" alone will determine if soap has excess lye!

I don't think it was the author's attempt to malign handcrafted soap, but rather just not checking the facts of soapmaking before making statements.

Those are great points, although I can also see it from a slightly different angle. A society that is newly rediscovering all the pioneering crafts would not be very good at them. If I tanned an animal hide, it would be very poorly done! I may know the approximate method, but without any master craftsman to show me how, I'd have to fumble my way along.

Same with soap. Even though I'm an experienced soapmaker, I would have a hard time making good soap without my digital scale. And if I didn't already know how to make soap before "The Change" happened and I only vaguely knew that you should mix potash with oils in a cauldron over a fire, my soap would be very lousy indeed. It would either turn out harsh or oily.

So, perhaps the author's intent was not to malign handcrafted soap, but simply to illustrate the fact that artisan crafts take many years to perfect.
